How Did a Real-Life Love Triangle Become a WWE Storyline?

It was supposed to be a fairy tale romance for professional wrestling fans, but real life intervened, turning sweethearts into enemies. The love triangle between Lita, Matt Hardy, and Edge captivated the wrestling world, with behind-the-scenes drama proving juicier than anything on Raw or SmackDown. Art soon imitated life, forcing viewers to question what was real and what was scripted. This is the true story.

1999 was pivotal for The Hardy Boyz, Edge, and Christian. Matt and Jeff Hardy won their first WWE Tag Team titles, while Edge and Christian emerged in the tag division. All four stole the show in a ladder match at that year's No Mercy. Around this time, Amy Dumas—later known as Lita—signed with WWE. She debuted on February 13, 2000, but soon left lightweight champion Essa Rios to join The Hardy Boyz, forming the popular Team Extreme. By then, Lita and Matt were already dating in real life, a fact confirmed to fans with a kiss on the February 19, 2001, episode of Raw.
